Great White more threatened than tigers!!

Great White Shark, taken off Gansbaai, SouthAfrica. Amazing shot! I am hoping to do a cage dive soon. Will let you know how it went of course. Damn! I am looking forward to it.
The one thing that really scares me is not the multiple rows of around 3000 teeth. Not at all. The thing that really terrifies me is the fact that these apex predators from the ocean are more threatened than tigers! Yup, you read that correctly. More threatened than tigers!
Like tigers, great whites are a top predator and, like tigers, they have suffered in recent years from habitat destruction and hunting. But unlike tigers, great white sharks get little public sympathy, said Dr Ronald O’Dor, senior scientist at the Census of Marine Life, a 10-year study into ocean wildlife.
An article in The Guardian mentions that the number of Great White sharks has dropped to an alarming 3500. This is really frightening, especially when one considers that the demand for shark fin soup has risen steeply over the last few years. Popular movies, such as Peter Benchley’s “Jaws” where these creatures are portrayed as villains don’t help one iota.
We need to take drastic action. Seriously. Boycott all restaurants selling shark-fin soup. The damn dish has no nutritional value at all and is not doing the environment any good.
On a more positive note, the USA have taken a step in the right direction, and are now at the forefront of shark conservation. The US Senate recently passed the Shark Conservation Act, which bolsters the prohibition of shark-finning in US waters. If you would like to know more about this you can click HERE

"The Seals of Nam" – a true horror story

Ok. So Christmas has come and gone and we sit here patiently waiting for the new years celebrations to begin. As I reflect on the year behind me, I can honestly say 2010 was a most rewarding year. Sure it had it’s low points, but I chose at the beginning of the year to make a difference, not only in my life, but in the lives of others as well. I bungee jumped the worlds highest, I walked with cheetahs, I climbed a mountain, I joined Sea Shepherd, I helped organize anti whaling demonstrations and am now busy with THE SEALS OF NAM

The Seals of Nam getting beaten to death in Namibia

“The Seals of Nam” is an initiative whereby I hope to bring ALL interested parties from around the world to join forces in condemnation of the cruel and barbaric practice of seal clubbing. 91 THOUSAND Cape Fur Seals are clubbed to death on the beaches of Namibia. 67 THOUSAND Harp Seals are clubbed to death on the ice floes of Canada. 21 March 2011 is International Human Rights Day. It is Namibian Independence Day. And… it is the day set aside for international protest action for the thousands of seals brutally clubbed to death each year.

You, the reader of my humble blog, are also invited to take part and become active in trying to stop the gross and inhumane practice of seal clubbing. Don’t think that as an individual you can’t do anything. There is LOADS you can do to become involved. This evil thrives because good people are not taking any action.

Here is a list of just a few things you can easily do. Not only will you be doing a favour for the seals of Namibia and Canada, but you will also feel good about yourself, knowing you have played a role in trying to prevent this annual slaughter.

Spread the word. Inform media, radio stations, news papers etc.Tweet and blog the about “The Seals of Nam -a true horror story.” For more info on the horrors of the Namibian Seal Cull, click here

Invite all you Facebook friends and e-mail contacts to this global event.http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=142174952503151

Start a protest in your city for the 21st March 2011. Its actually easier than you think. Here are some tips  Keep me informed on progress, so I can open communication channels between groups from the same place. This will make the campaign so much more effective.

You can sign online petitions and send mail to celebrities asking them to actively support and promote our initiative. Pamela Anderson, Paul McCartney and Charlize Theron are known to actively protest against the fur industry. Charlize in particular. She comes from South Africa and Namibia is its neighbour. Charlize supports the rhino cause as well as many others. Here is one contact address for her

Oprah is looking for people to interview for her final seasonSuggest Francois Hugo from Seal Alert SA who has been at the forefront of this fight for years. Ellen Degeneres is also big into animal welfare. The more people who request it, the greater our chances at getting the exposure we so desperately need.

Contact all the big name movements (and the little ones too), Sea Shepherd, Greenpeace, PETA, Bridget Bardot, WWF, Coalition to Abolish Fur Trade, WSPA, Animal Liberation Front, Vegan Society etc. Inform them that there is not a single animal charity to have an active campaign to protect “The Seals of Nam” Invite them to join this global initiative, where interested parties put aside their differences and work towards the common good. We shall, despite our differences, unite as one in condemnation of these atrocities. March 21 2011 is not only Human Rights Day and Namibian Independence day but ESPECIALLY the day for Cape Fur Seals, “The Seals of Nam” Provide these organizations with a link to this facebook events page.http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=142174952503151

As the groups join, they are to please indicate the Name of the Org on the wall, the name of the contact person, city or region and provide a link to their website. I will update the page accordingly and they will be credited as being “on board” If I miss one in error, they can please remind me by contacting me directly so I can fix.

Hatem Yavuz is the sole buyer of Cape Fur Seal pelts. He drives this murderous cull. You can mail him your thoughts. Tell him his time as “King of the Cull” is up. Here are contact details for his business

If you do get a response, please post it on the event page.

You can also send mails to the Namibian Government. Here is a list  of all their embassies, high commissions and consulates. Tell them you will boycott not only their tourism, but also all Namibian produce and you will actively discourage people from visiting their country if they do not end the cull. You can inform travel agents and ask them not to promote Namibia as a destination.Provide an alternative solution to the cull, such as large scale eco-tourism, which will not only generate increased wealth, but will also lead to the creation of many jobs in a country desperate for employment.

The SPCA in Namibia have both the legislative power and mandate to end this cull. Not only are they not living up to their name, The Society for PREVENTION of CRUELTY to animals, but they have CONDONED this madness, publicly stating that the violent clubbing of 91 000 seals to death is HUMANE!! I kid you not. Here is a news article
The Animal Protection Act of 1962 (Namibia) applies to all animals, it governs both domestic animals as well as wildlife. The act clearly states that beating an animal to death is an act of cruelty. This link will take you to the contact page of their website. Please feel free to send them as much hate mail as you wish.

Francois Hugo of Seal Alert SA with one of his beloved seals

At the time of writing this post, I am pleased to announce that Seal Alert SA and Oceanic Defence have confirmed full support. I have Pete Bethune from Earthrace signing off on funding and getting final confirmation and Sea Shepherd have also expressed interest.

Thanks so much. Have a safe holiday and an amazing and productive 2011.

Whistleblower to expose whaling industry

As Japan pushes to overturn a 24 year ban on commercial whaling, “Mr Whale” has come forward with allegations of corruption, bribery and other acts of criminality.

Supposedly hunted in the name of research, “Mr Whale”who worked on board the Nisshin Maru whale factory ship, has blown the whistle. He alleges the crewmen are instead seizing and selling prized cuts of meat to earn extra cash, in some cases many times more than their annual salary.

“Even before we arrived in the Antarctic Ocean,” he says of a recent expedition, “the more experienced whalers would talk about taking whale meat home to sell. It was an open secret. Even officials from the Institute of Cetacean Research [a quasi-governmental body that organises Japan’s whaling programme] on the ship knew what was happening, but they turned a blind eye to it.”

A tribute to Sea Shepherd

I made this last night for Sea Shepherd SA. Very moving, I hope you like it. No copy right infringement intended. Backing track is Sarah McLachlan. I do not own the rights to the pics, they were taken off the web. I do not make money out of this.

Window Cleaner with Cheese

Would you willingly eat dog food? Would you spray window cleaner on your Sunday roast? Would you inject meat with ammonia and feed it to your kids? This IS WHAT IS HAPPENING!! And you, the consumer, are not even aware of it!

Over the past few months I have been educating myself about my relationship with the planet and what role I play in the biosphere. Sounds like I have been smoking lots of potent stuff but, on the contrary, I have been learning some pretty interesting things.

I have, like many of you, been raised as a meat eater and have never questioned the origins of my tasty pre-packed lamb loin chops. It seems so natural to walk into a supermarket, grab your meat and go home to a delicious BBQ. How quick and simple it is to go to your MacDougall and order a burger and fries? Last night, I watched a documentary “Food Inc.” Let me tell you… there is NOTHING natural about what we are consuming!

Beef Patty Machine

As with any industry, the meat industry is driven by profits. Traditionally, all the extra cow parts, bits that had fallen on the floor, the intestines etc were ground up into a paste and made into pet food. Now, suddenly, you get a fast food company who is prepared to pay you more for this pink mush because they can sell it as Burger Patty. Let’s call them MacDougall’s so as to avoid a potential libel case.

MacDougall’s will send their clown to the processing companies and order say 6 million burger patties. Large slaughterhouses, such as the one in North Carolina operated by the Smithfield Packing Company, can slaughter up to 32 THOUSAND pigs per day. They are only to happy to sell their pink  mush for higher profits. They tell the farmers “We want a 100 THOUSAND cows today.”

The farmers meet the consumer demand by using various techniques. They grow genetically modified crops. They stop feeding the cows grass, but feed them a diet of  GM corn and ground up animal parts because it fattens the cow faster. They use anti-biotics and anabolic steroids. According to US FDA statistics, up to 13 million kilograms of anti-biotics are routinely pumped into cattle, pigs, sheep and chickens each year. They introduce disgustingly cruel battery farming techniques where cows are not free to roam but stand ankle deep in their own shit all day, they grow chickens to full size in just 39 days, whereas it used to take around 3 months. They even go so far as to clone animals.  And then…. then the slaughter begins.

Now with the slaughter process, the faeces, urine, the bloody intestines, the dirt on the floor etc comes the risk of food contamination and here is where ammonia comes in. Not to clean the tiled floor or the stainless steel counter tops, but the MEAT!! Ammonia, which is a main ingredient in window cleaner is used to “rinse” the pet food of e-coli before it is made into burger patties. This with the full knowledge and approval by the FDA. Two thirds of American burger meat has been treated this way and it plays an integral part in school feeding programs.

The selling point to this pink mush pet food is that while conventional beef-processing plants routinely churn out meat tainted with the deadly  E. coli 0157:H7 and with antibiotic-resistent salmonella, this stuff has been sterilized and is thus infection-free.

But it isn’t. Government and industry records obtained by The New York Times show that in testing for the school lunch program, E. coli and salmonella pathogens have been found dozens of times in Beef Products meat, challenging claims by the Beef Products Inc and the U.S.D.A. about the effectiveness of the treatment. Since 2005, E. coli has been found 3 times and salmonella 48 times, including back-to-back incidents in August in which two 27,000-pound batches were found to be contaminated.

My point is this. Modern cattle farms play a major role in global warming. The use of pesticides and fertilizers are wreaking havoc on our eco-systems. Feeding cattle on corn and animal parts has led not only to drug resistance in humans, but to such ghastly diseases such as Mad Cow.  When you are slaughtering 32 thousand animals in one day (almost a MILLION in a month) in just one plant of many, you cannot tell me there is no animal cruelty going on. If just ONE of those 32 thousand animals has the deadly e-coli virus or mad cow disease, the entire batch of meat can be infected. History shows it happens. Why then are you eating pet food rinsed in ammonia?

I’ll tell you why. Because it is easy to believe the clown when he tells you his French Fries are made from real potatoes. These “fries” can lie under the back seat of your car for three months and won’t go moldy. You believe the clown when he tells you his pet-food patty is ground beef simply because they are uniform in size, shape and texture.

We need to educate ourselves as to what we eat. We need to make conscientious decisions as to what we buy. Multi-national food stores will only respond to consumer buying patterns. It is up to YOU, the consumer, to insist on free-range and organic produce. Not only are these better for the environment, but are a damn sight tastier, superbly healthier and will make you feel great.

If you MUST eat meat, the least you can do is support Meat Free Monday. This is an initiative that was started by Sir Paul McCartney and is rapidly gaining popularity around the world.
